{"id":26123,"date":"2024-08-14T15:22:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T15:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.icgadv.com\/directory\/?p=26123"},"modified":"2025-08-22T13:28:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T13:28:27","slug":"atv-rules-of-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.icgadv.com\/directory\/atv-rules-of-the-road\/","title":{"rendered":"ATV Rules of the Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before You Rev That Engine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We love a good ride as much as anyone, but in Beavers Bend Cabin Country, there are a few ground rules (and we mean that literally) to keep the trails safe, the land healthy, and the fun going for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Ouachita National Forest (Ouachita WMA)<\/strong> is the only spot in McCurtain County where off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are legal for public use. The <strong>Honobia Creek Wildlife Management Area<\/strong> and <strong>Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area<\/strong> allow ATV riding <strong>only<\/strong> to help hunters get around <strong>during deer season<\/strong>\u2014and you\u2019ll need a deer hunting license for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OHVs include ATVs, 4-wheelers, 3-wheelers, UTVs (like Mules), and motorcycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before You Go<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Call the local Forest Service office at <strong>580-494-6402<\/strong>, check <strong><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/activity\/ouachita\/recreation.ohv\">USFS Ouachita OHV info<\/a><\/strong>, and review the <em>current<\/em> Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). That\u2019s your green light for where you can ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Rules (Read \u2018Em, Remember \u2018Em, Ride By \u2018Em)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Speed Limit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>25 MPH on the Ouachita WMA and all other WMAs \u2014 for <em>all<\/em> vehicles, ATVs included.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Equipment Requirements<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All OHVs must have a USFS-approved spark arrestor in working order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loud, modified exhausts? Nope. They\u2019re prohibited and may violate ODWC rules for Department Managed Lands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alcohol<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No alcoholic beverages or low-point beer allowed in the Ouachita National Forest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where You Can (and Can\u2019t) Ride<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>OHVs are <strong>only<\/strong> allowed on National Forest roads marked \u201cOPEN\u201d for ATV use on the <em>current<\/em> MVUM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If it\u2019s not on the MVUM as \u201cOPEN,\u201d it\u2019s closed. Past use doesn\u2019t count as permission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid forest floor riding \u2014 it\u2019s prohibited north and south of Hwy 70 in Beavers Bend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only ~33 miles of forest roads are open to ATVs (plus a few seasonal miles). Call the Forest Service if you\u2019re unsure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trail &amp; Terrain Restrictions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No riding on hiking, mountain biking, or equestrian-only trails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only motorcycles are allowed on the Indian Nations Trail in LeFlore County.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No driving on powerlines, pipelines, seismic lines, fire lines, or railroad rights-of-way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No driving on or crossing paved roads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No riding in streambeds, creek beds, lake beds, or along shorelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rider Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Helmets are <strong>required<\/strong> for anyone under 18.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No passengers unless the OHV was designed to carry them (after-market mods don\u2019t count).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear eye protection, boots, and gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yield to horseback riders \u2014 stop and give them the right of way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why These Rules Exist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heavy or irresponsible OHV use can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Damage watersheds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Destroy habitats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harm native plants and animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pollute streams and rivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By sticking to the rules, you\u2019re protecting the land <em>and<\/em> making sure ATV access sticks around. Riding in closed areas can lead to fines or even jail time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Seasonal &amp; Hunting-Specific Rule<\/strong>z<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As of <strong>August 1, 2008<\/strong>, OHV riding in Three Rivers WMA and Honobia Creek WMA is prohibited except for <strong>licensed deer hunters<\/strong> from <strong>Oct. 1 \u2013 Jan. 15<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During that time, OHV riders must wear <strong>fluorescent orange<\/strong> on the chest and head.
