But the water has its own set of rules, and knowing them keeps you (and everyone else) safe, legal, and grinning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oklahoma Boating Law Basics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Education &amp; Operator Age Rules<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Under 12?<\/strong> You can\u2019t operate:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A motorized vessel over 10 HP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A personal watercraft (PWC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A sail-powered vessel 16+ feet in length<br><strong>Unless<\/strong>:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have a state-approved boating safety certificate <strong>and<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re supervised by a competent adult (18+)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For PWCs, the adult must be within 500 yards and visually supervising.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For other vessels, the adult must be onboard and ready to take control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>All vessel operators<\/strong> must carry either:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Boating safety education certificate\/card (approved by OK Dept. of Public Safety)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OR photo ID proving you\u2019re at least 16.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visitors from other states<\/strong> who\u2019ve completed a NASBLA-recognized course are good to go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Life Jacket (PFD) Rules<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kids under 13 must wear a Coast Guard\u2013approved PFD on any boat under 26 feet, while underway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Everyone on a PWC, sailboard, or being towed behind a vessel must wear a Type I, II, III, or V PFD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ski belts don\u2019t count \u2014 they\u2019re only \u201cextra equipment.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inflatable PFDs can\u2019t be used for tow sports or other high-impact activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reckless or Negligent Operation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operating in a way that endangers life, limb, or property is a no-go. Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Speeding in no-wake or restricted areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive speed in congested zones or poor conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letting passengers ride in unsafe positions (gunwale, bow, transom) above idle speed without proper railing\/guards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boating during posted wind warnings or hazardous conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ignoring emergency vessels making signals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parking or beaching in marked swimming areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Extra Rules for PWCs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No operation between sunset and sunrise unless you have the required nav lights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If equipped, your engine cut-off lanyard must be attached to you during operation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No weaving through congested traffic or swerving dangerously.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No disturbing, chasing, or harassing wildlife.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Special Activity Rules<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Towing Skiers, Tubers, or Similar Devices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Boat must fit 2+ people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In addition to the operator, you need:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An observer at least 8 years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OR a wide-angle mirror so the operator can keep eyes forward while watching the participant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Towed participants must wear a properly fitted, USCG-approved vest-style PFD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No towing between sunset and sunrise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Diving &amp; Snorkeling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must display a red-and-white diver-down flag (20\u201d x 24\u201d with 4\u201d white stripe).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No posting a flag unless diving\/snorkeling within 100 yards of a functional boat ramp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In federal\/international waters, restricted-maneuver vessels must hoist a blue-and-white alpha flag.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Firearms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transport\/discharge from a vessel is only legal when hunting animals or fowl according to law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Operating Under the Influence (BUI)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Operating any vessel, PWC, water skis, or similar device under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BAC of <strong>0.10% or greater<\/strong> = legally under the influence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On-water officers can test you; refusal can increase penalties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fines and possible jail time apply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Registration &amp; Titling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All motorized vessels used mainly in Oklahoma waters must be titled and registered, except:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Boats properly registered in another state using OK waters &lt; 60 consecutive days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Federally documented vessels with USCG (if here > 60 days, must register &amp; display decal)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-motorized boats (canoes, kayaks, rowboats, punts, rubber rafts)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To Register:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit one of 300 state motor license agents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or contact:<br><strong>Oklahoma Tax Commission \u2013 Motor Vehicle Division<\/strong><br>2501 North Lincoln Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73194<br>(405) 521-3221 | <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oktax.state.ok.us\">www.oktax.state.ok.us<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Keep Onboard:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Certificate of Registration (always available for inspection)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Display validation decals (renew annually by June 30)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep boat &amp;
