When you\u2019re in the heart of Hochatown, Oklahoma \u2013 surrounded by pines, somewhere off US 259 \u2013 you get a feeling.\u00a0<\/span>
\nCall it a cliche middle-of-the-wilderness moment, but you know you\u2019re on some kind of different wavelength. It\u2019s a bit slower. It\u2019s relaxed. Offbeat. And it\u2019s a vibe that carries throughout the entire county.\u00a0<\/span>Creative entrepreneurs Jessica Alkirwi and Kim Kennedy felt it the minute they stepped foot into the lush area of southeastern Oklahoma more than two decades ago \u2013 long before they ever met (Jessica as a girl scout, Kim as a boy scout).\u00a0<\/span>
\nAnd they knew there was a word for it.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHochatime.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>
\nAnd in 2015 they\u2019d turn that feeling \u2013 being on Hochatime \u2013 into a brand.<\/span>
\nArmed with a logo, one design (neither can 100% recall whether it was for a hat or shirt), and the right amount of insanity (both agree this was required to pursue the business risk), Jessica and Kim launched <\/span>Hochatime<\/span><\/a>, a clothing and lifestyle brand based out of Hochatown, Oklahoma.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\n\u201cWe were trying to come up with something that captured the essence of the area,\u201d says Kim. \u201cIt\u2019s such a laid back area, and until you\u2019re here, you don\u2019t really get it. Everything moves at a different speed.\u201d<\/span>
\nAfter their first design launched on April Fools (yes, the humor was not lost on them), Jessica and Kim began to partner with local businesses to carry Hochatime shirts and hats.\u00a0<\/span>
\nLess than one year later, their merch was available at several popular Beavers Bend shops and restaurants, like <\/span>Grateful Head<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cTo see the community really get behind it, once we created this word \u2013 Hochatime \u2013 has been remarkable,\u201d says Kim. \u201cIt\u2019s more than a place \u2013 it\u2019s a state of mind, a pace of life out here. People in the community come up to us all the time and say <\/span>this<\/span><\/i> is it: you\u2019ve given us an identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

For the Love of the Park<\/b>
\nFrom the beginning, Jessica and Kim knew they also wanted to give back to the area that inspired Hochatime.\u00a0<\/span>
\nFor them, all roads lead back to <\/span>Beavers Bend State Park<\/span><\/a>. So, they met with the Beavers Bend State Park manager about ways to partner.<\/span>
\nThe answer? Resurrecting the long-dormant <\/span>Friends of Beavers Bend<\/span><\/a>, a nonprofit group once dedicated to conserving Beavers Bend State Park. Hochatime would lead the cause of getting Friends of Beavers Bend back up and running \u2013 while also volunteering time and resources to the organization.<\/span>
\n\u201cA portion of every Hochatime purchase goes to Friends of Beavers Bend, and those proceeds go directly back to the park,\u201d says Kim. \u201cSo, we\u2019ve been helping them to help the park, very closely.\u201d<\/span>
\nFor a little more than two years, part of Hochatime\u2019s proceeds have gone toward everything from trash cleanups and community events to improving park infrastructure. Beyond giving back to the park, they also help with design work and merch for other local businesses in the area.\u00a0<\/span>
\n
\n<\/span>Next Step: Going Mobile\u00a0<\/b>
\n\u201cWe didn\u2019t know what the future held,\u201d says Jessica. \u201cWe came across an ad for a green bus \u2013 that had been a retail shop previously \u2013 bought it, and that essentially became our mobile shop. We would drive it around Hochatown and set up in different spots on weekends. That grew into \u2013 and fit into \u2013\u00a0more of the vibe and shopping experience of Hochatime.\u201d<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nWhile running business through the bus, they plotted the next stage: an actual brick-and-mortar right in the heart of Hochatown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Brick-and-Mortar Bound<\/b>
\nDriving through the main drag of Hochatown shops and restaurants, you\u2019ll see an Airstream, plunging through a cabin-like storefront.\u00a0<\/span>
\nA 1977 Argosy (affectionately called Betty White), to be exact.\u00a0<\/span>
\nAnd it\u2019s definitely double-take worthy.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cJessica has always had a love for Airstreams,\u201d says Kim. \u201cAnd this was a great way to bring that outdoor theme \u2013 and vintage vibe of Hochatime \u2013 inside. It was really complementary to what we were trying to accomplish.\u201d<\/span>
\nJessica found Betty White in Joplin, and soon after, she and Kim met with an architect to figure out how to incorporate her into their brick-and-mortar dreams (without having to completely disassemble or destroy her).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe solution was to keep her intact and build around her.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nBetty White now serves as almost a shop within a shop \u2013 where you can find anything from kid hoodies and tees to Hochatime onesies. Also, not a bad nod to their early mobile business days.<\/span>
\n\u201cIt was super important for us to make it a unique shopping experience and weave in the outdoor vibe,\u201d says Jessica. \u201cI always wanted to do something different. We didn\u2019t want it to feel like a strip mall.\u201d<\/span>
\nPretty positive they achieved their goal.\u00a0<\/span>
\nEvery detail of the shop reflects the Hochatime brand to its core. A little throwback, a little modern. A lotta outdoorsy. Full of character. Undeniably offbeat.\u00a0<\/span>
\nKim attributes a lot of the interior to Jessica\u2019s great eye \u2013 although she\u2019d probably scoff and humbly call it a team effort (she truly is charming that way). She handpicked a great deal of the elements you see in the store \u2013 from Betty White herself to nostalgic pieces that represent Jessica and Kim\u2019s past and love of the outdoors (like their old scout guides). The structure itself is even made from mixed materials \u2013 some new wood and some more than 100 years old.<\/span>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\nTheir love for the area \u2013 and the passion put into Hochatime \u2013 is clear.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cWe did it for the area, first and foremost,\u201d says Jessica. \u201cHochatime isn\u2019t really about either one of us. It\u2019s about our love of the area and the people, and passion for the park.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\nSo walk through the Ouachitas. Cast a line in Lower Mountain Fork River. Wade in Broken Bow Lake. Get on Hochatime. It\u2019ll be hard not to, when you\u2019re out here.<\/span>
