McCurtain Bound for the Holidays

Grandma’s house getting a little crowded these days? Blow-up mattress at the in-laws not sounding so appealing? Or maybe just want to shake things up this year?

Traditions are great. But so are starting new ones.

Enter: McCurtain County Christmas.

Make the holiday season a reason for a cozy getaway – with room to stretch out – in southeastern Oklahoma. We have the ingredients for feeling all kinds of festive, away from home. With some luxury cabins that can fit as many as 40 people – and tons of holiday-themed happenings and events – you’ll still be able to get the family together and celebrate, without sacrificing the holiday vibes you count on. So pack that tinsel, that ugly sweater, and get here already.

The Cabin

Way better than a crowded hotel room or spare bedroom. Get all those creature comforts you love – and some you probably wouldn’t have at home anyway. Like a hot tub overlooking a vast stretch of pines. Or a pool table. Or massive outdoor fire pit.

Plus, you can always deck your cabin out in your standard holiday fare – some garland, some stockings, some twinkling lights – and you have yourself a festive retreat in the woods.

Need a little privacy? If everyone under one roof isn’t your thing, get a string of cabins for the fam, all in the same area. Many cabin rental agencies offer group booking, so you can ensure that everyone stays close (but maybe not too close). Designate a homebase, and set up there for the big holiday feast and festivities.

The Food

An important component of any holiday. We know it’s all about the food (minus the cranberry sauce, probably). With cabins that feature giant kitchens and all the tools necessary to cook a great meal, you don’t have to give up Aunt Karen’s traditional green bean casserole or grandma’s pecan pie. Or that turkey (we recommend smoking it outside). Just get everyone  to pitch in. To make life easier, some cabins even offer the option to arrange for a pre-stocked kitchen.

And, if you’re up to the task – you can hunt your own holiday turkey (just be sure to follow hunting regulations and plan ahead).

If low-key is more your style, you can order out from one of several restaurants in the area, get a delicious catering spread or hire an on-site cook. Maybe even give grandma a break on the pie-making this year, and pick up one from Steven’s Gap (whose pies have been reviewed by Southern Living Magazine!).

For a little extra merry, make sure you’re stocked up on all the local wines and beers McCurtain has to offer.

The Festivities

McCurtain County gets in the spirit of things – in a big way. From holiday markets to parades and Christmas light displays, there are several ways to get your fix of cheer. Without the overwhelming crowds and cliche holiday hustle and bustle.

If holing up in the cabin for quality time is more your style, get in the spirit with a holiday movie marathon (HD flat screens at your disposal), board games (many cabins are stocked with classic standbys) or your family’s own go-to tradition.
